Joe Mitchell Obituary

Joe Collins Mitchell passed away early Monday, February 23, 2026, at his home with his wife and 3 sons. Born in Eufaula, Alabama, on May 25, 1952, Joe was the son of the late Americus Columbus (Mac) Mitchell and Dorothy Garrison Mitchell. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 3 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Eufaula, Alabama with Chapman Funeral Home directing and Rev. Matt Avera officiating. The burial will follow in Old Fairview Cemetery. He attended Eufaula City Schools and graduated in 1970 from Eufaula High School, where he sang in the concert choir and was named most valuable lineman on the EHS football team.

Following high school, Joe attended Jacksonville State University, graduating from the School of Business in 1974. He also proudly served in the U.S. Air National Guard during the early 1970s. After returning to Eufaula, Joe joined his father in the family business, Eufaula Hardware Company, ensuring a third-generation legacy. Known for his unwavering commitment to the community, Joe built lasting relationships throughout Eufaula and was respected for always putting his customers first.

In 1975, Joe married Mona Howard, with whom he shared a devoted and loving life for 50 years. Mona would later join him in serving the people of Eufaula at the hardware store, where together they became familiar, trusted faces to generations of customers.

Joe was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Eufaula, where he faithfully served as president of the Board of Trustees and sang in the church choir. He was also an active member of the Commercial Club, reflecting his dedication to the civic and economic life of his hometown.

After retiring, Joe, Mona, and his sister-in-law Ann, frequently visited River Oaks, where they brought joy to residents by leading singalongs, sharing Joe’s lifelong love of music and fellowship. An avid outdoorsman, Joe was also an instrumental member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Barbour County Chapter, where he combined his passion for the outdoors with conservation and camaraderie.

Joe’s life was defined by service - to his family, his faith, his community, and the people he met each day. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and quiet leadership will long be remembered by all who knew him.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Americus Columbus (Mac) Mitchell Jr. and Dorothy Garrison Mitchell; his brother, Benjamin Garrison Mitchell; and his brother-in-law, David B. Ellis.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Mona Howard Mitchell, whom he married on April 26, 1975; his sister, Patricia Mitchell Ellis; and his children: Blake Mitchell (Candy), Brad Mitchell (Crissy), and Scott Mitchell (Ashlee).
